A source-first legal research workflow

Frame a legal issue, review candidate authorities and preserve source context in a Matter.

Published 2026-10-09

1. Frame the issue

Start with the legal issue, material facts, forum, procedural stage and any relevant date. Separate what the file proves from what a party alleges. If a rule, date or forum is unknown, mark it as a research question instead of supplying an assumption.

2. Review retrieved authorities

Use the research view to inspect each case name, court, date, citation and available passage. A search result is a candidate. Read the judgment and check the relevant paragraph before relying on a proposition. A verification label may establish source identity; it does not by itself establish that the judgment supports a proposition or remains good law.

3. Keep source limitations visible

If no verified source is available, treat that as a limitation in the present search, not proof that no authority exists. Check source coverage, forum and date ranges. Search for adverse authority as well as support.

4. Save work with the Matter

Save useful research to the correct Matter and confirm workspace membership before attaching private case material. Recheck the original source before using a passage in advice or a filing.

NyayStack availability of external retrieval depends on provider configuration and source coverage. AI-generated analysis is a lawyer-review aid; it is not a substitute for the judgment text or independent legal verification.
